Billy Bobak – “Respite” + “Indo Girls”

“Respite” is a magnetic new track from Billy Bobak, featuring Aya. Gorgeous, trickling guitars entrance past the one-minute mark, aesthetically fondly reminiscent of Aztec Camera. “What can you do now, as life moves,” exudes a captivating mystique. String-laden undercurrents add a memorable chill at the mid-point. “Respite” is an impressively produced and written track, touting a timeless beauty.

Per the artist: “This song is about working in a boring retail job in a UK supermarket. The only thing that stops the protagonist in the song sliding into a depression is his naïve crush on an older worker colleague, who’s role in the workplace he simultaneously admires and feels sorry for. His infatuation for tis girl brings him to his epiphany of where he needs to go and who he needs to become outside of this place.”

Another recent highlight from Billy Bobak is “Indo Girls,” which tells “the tales of desolate souls encountered on travels in the far east.” Waves crash upon the coast amidst lonesome guitar plucks to start, the shanty-like vibe of the stirring vocals and string accompaniments playing with riveting qualities. The ghostly vocal effect approaching the three-minute mark sends chills. “Indo Girls” is further example of Billy Bobak’s strong penchant for songwriting and crafting compelling lyrical narratives.

“Respite” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2021’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Folk.
